MOTU 16A, 848, and 10pre Receive Milan Certification

Studio Economik |

MOTU has completed Milan Certification for the 16A, 848, and 10pre audio interfaces. Each model includes two Gigabit AVB networking ports for routing and distributing large channel counts across compatible audio networks.

Built-In Network Switching

The MOTU 16A, 848, and 10pre have been certified by the Avnu Alliance as bridged endstations. Each interface includes a built-in 1 Gigabit Milan AVB switch with two external Ethernet ports on the rear panel.

This configuration allows multiple interfaces to be connected in a daisy chain. In many installations, users can build an expanded audio network without adding a separate Ethernet switch. The two-port design can be useful in studios, production facilities, live sound systems, and installed AV environments where network layout and cable management need to remain straightforward.

Compatibility Across Milan Networks

Milan is a standardized implementation of AVB and TSN Ethernet networking developed by professional audio manufacturers within the Avnu Alliance. It establishes specific requirements for audio formats, diagnostics, stream mapping, and controller behaviour.

These requirements reduce the ambiguity that can occur when manufacturers implement optional AVB features differently. A Milan Certified device must handle streams and network commands according to the same defined profile, helping engineers build systems with more consistent routing, synchronization, and device discovery.

The certification allows the MOTU 16A, 848, and 10pre to operate on networks that include Milan Certified equipment from manufacturers such as Meyer Sound, L-Acoustics, d&b audiotechnik, and DiGiCo.

Available Through a Firmware Update

Existing owners of the MOTU 16A, 848, and 10pre can add Milan support through a free firmware update available from MOTU. No hardware modification is required.

MOTU has also released several firmware, driver, and CueMix Pro improvements that expand system compatibility, routing control, synchronization, and device management.

Recent MOTU Software and Firmware Updates

The latest updates include several practical improvements for Windows compatibility, network control, routing, synchronization, and critical listening.

  • ARM processor support for Windows, including compatible firmware, drivers, and the CueMix Pro application
  • 24-channel WDM input and output streams on Windows, with independent configuration for each direction
  • 64 multipurpose delay channels in the CueMix Pro routing matrix, with up to 2 milliseconds of delay per channel
  • One-click network synchronization across current and legacy MOTU network devices
  • Manual static IPv4 address assignment from the front-panel display
  • Direct connection to devices at specific IP addresses on VPNs and networks without multicast discovery
  • Clock freewheeling during temporary network clock interruptions
  • Optional control of the interface’s main output level from a Mac keyboard
  • Front-panel lockout to prevent unintended changes
  • Minimum Phase, Linear Phase Fast, and Linear Phase Slow DAC filter options
More Flexible Networked Audio Systems

Milan Certification makes the MOTU 16A, 848, and 10pre more practical for facilities that combine recording interfaces, digital consoles, loudspeaker systems, processors, and other networked audio equipment.

For existing owners, the firmware update adds a significant networking capability without requiring a new interface. For engineers planning a larger AVB installation, the certification provides clearer expectations around compatibility, clocking, stream management, and system behaviour.
