Description

The AEA R84A Active Ribbon Microphone delivers the lush, vintage-inspired character of classic ribbon mics with the modern flexibility of active circuitry. Built on the sonic legacy of the iconic R44, the R84A captures rich lows, natural mids, and a smooth top-end, offering an unmistakably warm and detailed sound. Where the original R84 is passive, the R84A features onboard JFET electronics and a custom toroidal transformer, boosting output by 12dB and ensuring consistent performance across a wider range of preamps including many found in today’s audio interfaces. This makes it an ideal choice for both studio professionals and mobile recording setups.

With its large, low-tension aluminum ribbon and signature figure-8 polar pattern, the R84A excels at capturing vocals, acoustic instruments, strings, brass, and even loud sources like drums or amplifiers with minimal coloration and exceptional transient detail. The mic’s controlled proximity effect and wide frequency response (20Hz to 20kHz) allow it to be positioned close to sources without overwhelming low-end buildup, while its active design minimizes noise and maintains signal integrity even across long cable runs or in RF-heavy environments. Whether you're aiming for an intimate vocal take or expansive room ambiance, the R84A delivers classic ribbon tone with modern usability, making it a versatile workhorse for studios of all sizes.
