Never before has a ribbon mic delivered as much clarity and breadth of sound in a package so fit for both studio and live settings as the supercardioid KU5A
The supercardioid KU5A breaks new ground in ribbon technology with its acutely focused directionality that rejects bleed from other instruments, room reflections, and loud ambience in the studio and on stage.
As a near-field ribbon designed for close range recording, the KU5A delivers the low-end heft and pronounced midrange one expects of AEA ribbons and with moderate, manageable proximity effect. Vocalists can sing directly into the grill of the KU5A, as its interior components are the most protected of any in the AEA lineup.
The KU5A is equipped with active electronics, fit for any preamp in the studio and on the road, as well as an integrated high-pass filter to roll off low end in close range recording applications.

I'm not saying it's perfect for every voice, but on mine, it sounds natural in all the ways I hoped for. It captures the sound of my voice in a way that feels like I'm just standing in the room, no mic in the way.
The active electronics make it super quiet with any preamp, something I can't say about my Beyerdynamic M160 or other passive ribbon mics. Lire plus
The form factor is also a huge plus, much easier to position than a large condenser. I'd describe it as a sleeker, prettier SM7B with a more refined sound.
The integrated cable isn't ideal, I suppose, but this seems to be part of AEA's design philosophy. I just run the cable along the mic stand and connect it at the base, no problem.
It also excels on acoustic instruments. On acoustic guitar, it delivers a warm, intimate tone. Amazing quality and versatility.

Instant Classic!
Worked with Louis to preorder this mic. I likely wouldn't have purchased it without his assistance but he tried it out at NAMM and now that I have it can say he was bang on. Great rejection, detail of a condenser but that beautiful smooth ribbon sound...also Lire plus
