Manley has released the Dual Main EQ and Dual Mid Band EQ, two stereo passive tube equalizers designed for modern recording, mixing, and mastering workflows. Both units combine passive inductor-based filter networks with high-headroom tube makeup gain stages and transformer-coupled balanced outputs.

The release carries Manley’s established analog architecture into a revised dual-channel format with expanded frequency choices, carefully matched stereo operation, illuminated switching, universal power compatibility, and a new industrial design. Each equalizer is built in California and designed for use on individual tracks, stereo buses, stems, mix buses, and mastering chains.

Both models are labelled for conventional Left and Right operation as well as Mid and Side processing. An external Mid/Side encoder and decoder is required, but the panel layout makes either workflow easy to follow.

The Manley Dual Main EQ

The Dual Main EQ handles broad tonal shaping across the low and high ends of the spectrum. Its passive filter curves are designed for adjustments that affect the overall balance and perspective of a source rather than narrow corrective work.

The low-frequency section provides continuously variable boost and attenuation at 20, 30, 60, 90, or 120 Hz. Boost reaches up to 15 dB, while attenuation reaches up to 16 dB. Since the boost and cut circuits use different curve shapes, they can be applied simultaneously without simply cancelling each other.

This interaction is one of the unit’s most useful features. Engineers can add low-frequency weight while reducing energy slightly higher in the bass and low-midrange. On a kick drum, bass instrument, mix bus, or finished master, this can produce a bottom end that feels larger while remaining controlled.

The high-frequency boost section provides up to 20 dB of peaking boost, with a bandwidth control that moves from narrower, higher-Q settings to wider contours. A separate high-frequency shelf provides up to 21 dB of attenuation. Together, these controls allow the Dual Main EQ to add presence and extension, soften an aggressive top end, or change the overall spectral perspective of a mix.

The Manley Dual Mid Band EQ

The Dual Mid Band EQ concentrates on the region where much of a recording’s musical information lives. Vocal intelligibility, instrument separation, tonal density, depth, boxiness, harshness, and forwardness are all strongly affected by midrange balance.

Its low-frequency peak section offers five selections at 200, 300, 500, 700, and 1000 Hz, with up to 11 dB of continuously variable boost. The central dip section provides eleven selectable frequencies from 200 Hz to 7 kHz and up to 11 dB of attenuation. A high-frequency peak section adds up to 10 dB at 1.5, 2, 3, 4, or 5 kHz.

This control arrangement is especially useful for shaping relationships between instruments. A modest low-mid boost can add body, while a carefully placed midrange cut can open space around vocals, guitars, keyboards, drums, or orchestral sources. The high-frequency peak section can then restore presence or articulation without relying on a conventional high shelf.

The Dual Mid Band EQ is more focused than the Dual Main EQ, but it retains the broad, naturally integrated response associated with passive equalization. It is intended for tonal refinement rather than surgical correction, particularly in mixing and mastering applications where small adjustments can have a substantial effect.

A Shared Tube and Transformer Signal Path

Both equalizers use an all-tube audio path with 5751 tubes for input gain and 12BH7 tubes in the output stage. The passive networks introduce insertion loss by design, and the tube amplifier restores level while providing the headroom required for professional line-level operation.

Balanced inputs are provided on combination XLR and TRS connectors. Balanced XLR outputs are transformer coupled, while quarter-inch unbalanced outputs are direct coupled. Inserting a plug into the unbalanced output disconnects the transformer and balanced XLR output, so the two output types are intended to be used separately.

The bypass switches remove the equalization networks from the circuit, but they do not create a hardwire bypass. Audio continues to pass through the tube stages. This means the amplifier and output path remain part of the sound even when no EQ is engaged.

Both units provide a maximum input level of +30 dBV, up to +30 dBu output into a 100 kOhm load, 26 dB of headroom above a +4 dBu reference level, and a total frequency response extending from 10 Hz to 70 kHz.

The Dual Main EQ is specified with a 122 dB dynamic range and a noise floor of -92 dBu. The Dual Mid Band EQ is specified with a 115 dB dynamic range and a noise floor of -85 dBu. Each model occupies two rack spaces, weighs 11 pounds, and consumes 26 watts.

Designed for Stereo and Mastering Work

The matched dual-channel construction makes both models suitable for critical stereo processing. Stable channel tracking is important when equalizing full mixes, stereo stems, and mastered program material, where even small left-to-right differences can affect image placement.

The Left, Right, Mid, and Side labelling also reflects the influence of Manley CEO and mastering engineer Dirk Ulrich. Used with an external Mid/Side matrix, the equalizers can process centre and side information independently. This can be useful for managing centre focus, stereo width, low-frequency placement, vocal presence, and spatial detail.

The Dual Main EQ is the broader tonal tool of the pair. It is suited to low-end weight, high-frequency perspective, overall balance, and large but natural-sounding contours. The Dual Mid Band EQ provides more precise control over congestion, clarity, separation, and the placement of important musical elements.

Used together, the two units cover a wide range of equalization tasks while maintaining a consistent tube and transformer signal path.

Practical Updates for Modern Studios

Manley has equipped both equalizers with an internal universal power supply that accepts 90 to 254 VAC at 50 or 60 Hz. This removes the need for separate regional voltage versions and makes the units easier to integrate into studios, mobile rigs, and international facilities.

A front-panel status indicator flashes during the approximately 40-second warmup period. The audio path remains muted until the tubes reach their operating condition, helping prevent unwanted clicks and transients from reaching downstream equipment.

The controls use conductive plastic attenuators and gold-plated contact switches. Both models also feature updated illuminated switching and a revised visual identity that signals a new generation of Manley hardware without changing the basic passive tube philosophy behind the circuits.

Two Complementary Equalizers

The Dual Main EQ and Dual Mid Band EQ divide the equalization process into two practical roles.

The Dual Main EQ is designed for broad low- and high-frequency shaping, including the simultaneous boost and attenuation technique associated with classic passive equalizers. The Dual Mid Band EQ addresses the dense centre of the spectrum, where relatively small moves can improve focus, separation, and musical communication.

Both retain the qualities engineers expect from this style of equipment. Broad passive curves, substantial headroom, tube makeup gain, transformer-coupled balanced outputs, and controls that reward listening rather than adjustment by numbers alone.
