Solid State Logic’s Bus Comp Classic brings the sound and workflow of the legendary SSL Bus Compressor into a dedicated 1U analogue processor. Built around high-performance THAT 2181 VCAs and SSL’s distinctive sidechain architecture, it delivers the punch, movement and cohesion that have made SSL bus compression a defining part of countless finished records. Precision stepped controls for ratio, attack and release keep operation fast and repeatable, while expanded settings and SSL Auto Release provide additional flexibility for mix buses, stems, drum groups and other programme material.

Variable VCA Drive broadens the compressor’s character considerably. At its cleanest setting, it delivers the clarity and transient response associated with SSL’s SuperAnalogue designs. Increasing the control progressively introduces the harmonic colour associated with classic 4000 Series and FX384 circuitry, extending into more pronounced saturation for aggressive drums and parallel compression. This makes Bus Comp Classic equally comfortable providing transparent mix control or adding deliberate analogue character.

Modern sidechain features make it easy to integrate into contemporary production workflows. A six-position sidechain high-pass filter helps prevent bass-heavy material from causing excessive gain reduction, while a genuine stereo external sidechain supports creative processing and sophisticated stem-printing techniques. The result is a focused SSL compressor that preserves the familiar feel of the original while offering a wider range of musical control and studio flexibility.
