Description

The Weiss DAC204-MK2 is an updated version of the DAC204 digital-to-analog converter, offering improvements in performance while retaining the compact form factor and functional design of its predecessor. It is designed for users who require high-quality audio conversion with versatile connectivity for both professional and high-end listening environments. The unit supports a wide range of digital inputs including USB, Toslink, and RCA, and provides both balanced (XLR) and unbalanced (RCA) analog outputs.

This MK2 edition includes a newly integrated ES9028PRO DAC chip, selected for its effective jitter suppression capabilities. This upgrade improves the reliability of audio playback when using lower-quality or unstable digital sources. Additionally, the output stage has been redesigned with nearly zero output impedance, making it more adaptable to challenging cabling scenarios and low-impedance headphones. Sound characteristics have been refined by tuning the distortion behavior and reconstruction filters by ear, aiming for natural and transparent reproduction.

Owners of existing DAC204 units can transition to the MK2 version by replacing the DAC board and updating the software. Units with serial numbers 0820 or above qualify for this upgrade at no charge, and the company offers a simple interface for performing the software update. These enhancements also apply to the DAC205 variant, which shares a similar architecture but excludes USB input capabilities. Let me know if you'd like a brief comparison between the MK2 and the original version.

Features

High-Quality Digital-to-Analog Conversion
Converts digital audio from USB, RCA, or Toslink to analog output.

Versatile Input Options
Accepts USB, RCA (AES/EBU or S/PDIF), and Toslink inputs.

Multiple Output Formats
Provides both balanced (XLR) and unbalanced (RCA) analog outputs, plus digital outputs on XLR, RCA, and BNC.

USB Support for High-Resolution Audio
Handles high sampling rates and DSD formats via USB.

Improved Jitter Elimination in MK2
The MK2 features a new ES9028PRO DAC chip with stronger jitter suppression for better sound even from unstable sources.

Enhanced Sound Tuning
Distortion performance and reconstruction filters in the MK2 are tuned by ear for optimal audio quality.

Upgraded Output Stage
MK2 introduces a near-zero ohm output impedance, making it easier to drive low impedance headphones or long cables.

Selectable Output Levels
Four volume settings are available using two rear switches.

Downsampling Capability
High-resolution USB inputs are downsampled when necessary; DSD formats can be converted to PCM.
