Drawmer has released the FC1 500 Series FET Compressor and OC1 500 Series Opto Compressor, giving engineers two clearly different approaches to dynamics control in a compact single-slot format. The FC1 is designed for speed, punch, and assertive control, while the OC1 focuses on smooth, warm, natural compression. Both modules carry a control set that feels closer to a full rackmount processor than a stripped-down 500 Series design.

This is not simply a choice between two faceplates. The compression topology changes how each module reacts to a source, which makes the pair useful across tracking, mixing, and stereo processing. Engineers can choose the FC1 when transients need to be shaped decisively, or the OC1 when the goal is to manage dynamics while preserving an easy, musical envelope.

FC1 FET Compression for Speed and Punch

The Drawmer FC1 uses FET compression, making it particularly well suited to sources that benefit from fast attack and release behaviour. Drums, bass, electric guitars, room microphones, and aggressive vocals are natural starting points. It can tighten peaks, bring a performance forward, or add the kind of energetic movement that makes a track feel more immediate.

The FC1 provides dedicated input and output gain, threshold, ratio, attack, and release controls. A Wet/Dry Mix control supports parallel compression directly from the front panel, allowing heavily compressed detail to be blended underneath the original signal without requiring additional routing.

Each rotary control uses a 21-position detented high-precision potentiometer. That makes settings easier to document and recall, which is especially useful in hybrid studios where sessions move between analogue hardware and DAW-based workflows.

OC1 Optical Compression for Smooth Dynamic Control

The Drawmer OC1 uses optical compression for a softer, more natural response. It is designed to control level without making the processing feel detached from the performance. Vocals and acoustic guitars are obvious applications, but the OC1 can also work well on bass, keyboards, strings, room microphones, and other sources that need consistent level with a less aggressive envelope.

Like the FC1, the OC1 provides input and output gain, threshold, ratio, attack, release, and Wet/Dry Mix controls. This level of adjustment is uncommon on many optical compressors, which often reduce the interface to only a few broad controls. The OC1 keeps the familiar character of optical gain reduction while giving the engineer more authority over timing and intensity.

Its 21-position detented controls also support repeatable settings, making it practical for recall-heavy production environments as well as traditional analogue sessions.

BIG and AIR Shape the Compressor’s Response

Both modules include Drawmer’s BIG and AIR modes, adapted from the company’s 1973 multiband studio compressor.

BIG reduces the sidechain’s sensitivity to low frequencies. This keeps bass-heavy material from dominating the detector and pulling down the rest of the spectrum. The result can feel fuller and more stable, particularly on a mix bus, drum bus, bass-rich stem, or any source where low-frequency energy causes obvious pumping.

AIR helps preserve high-frequency detail that can become less apparent during compression. It can keep vocals open, acoustic instruments articulate, and cymbals lively without simply adding an aggressive treble boost. Because AIR changes how the compressor responds, it can retain clarity while the gain reduction is taking place rather than attempting to restore it afterward.

These modes give the FC1 and OC1 more tonal flexibility than their basic FET and optical descriptions might suggest. The compressor can be adjusted not only for how much it reduces level, but also for how it reacts across the frequency range.

CRUSH Adds Harmonic Colour

The FC1 and OC1 also include Drawmer’s CRUSH harmonic feature. Its effect changes with the amount of input gain, allowing the user to move from subtle analogue colour toward more audible saturation.

CRUSH is intended to add harmonic richness, increase midrange presence, thicken the low end, and give the top end a smoother sense of shimmer. On the FC1, this can reinforce the module’s more energetic character. On the OC1, it can add density and texture while retaining the smoother optical compression envelope.

The relationship between input level and harmonic effect makes gain staging part of the sound. Engineers can run the module conservatively for cleaner control or push the front end when a track needs more attitude and weight.

Program-Dependent Release for Heavy Compression

A PGM mode introduces a second, slower release time that changes in proportion to program material above the threshold. This helps reduce excessive pumping and unnatural movement when the compressor is working hard.

PGM mode can be useful when a fixed release setting sounds right during quieter passages but recovers too quickly after larger peaks. The additional program-dependent behaviour allows the module to respond more naturally as the intensity of the material changes.

Stereo Linking and Practical Metering

Adjacent FC1 or OC1 modules can be linked through pin 6 of a compatible 500 Series chassis. When linked, the module requiring the greatest amount of gain reduction becomes the master trigger for the connected units. The link function includes the BIG and AIR modes as well as threshold and ratio behaviour.

This makes matched pairs practical for stereo buses, overheads, keyboards, room microphones, and other two-channel sources where independent compression could disturb the stereo image.

The front-panel VU meter can display gain reduction or a choice of input and output level. A hard-wire bypass connects the input directly to the output, allowing accurate comparisons between processed and unprocessed signals.

Choosing Between the FC1 and OC1

The FC1 is the more direct choice when speed and impact are the priority. It suits sources that need firm transient control, added punch, or an intentionally energetic compression sound.

The OC1 is better suited to performances that need to be stabilized without losing their natural shape. It is especially relevant for vocals, acoustic instruments, and sustained sources where smoother gain reduction is often preferable.

Because the two modules share the same deeper feature set, the decision does not require sacrificing parallel compression, tonal shaping, saturation, recallable controls, stereo linking, or detailed metering. The choice comes down to the response and character that best fit the source.
