Universal Audio has released the next generation of its Volt USB audio interfaces, with six new models covering everything from compact mobile recording to larger desktop setups. The new lineup includes the Volt 1 Gen 2, Volt 2 Gen 2, Volt 4 Gen 2, Volt 2 Max, Volt 4 Max, and flagship Volt 4P Max.
Across the range, UA has upgraded Volt with 32-bit / 192 kHz conversion, expanded Tone Shaping Preamps, new recording tools, and a redesigned workflow built around faster setup and hands-on control.
Volt Gen 2 brings several of the conveniences normally associated with more advanced recording systems into an accessible USB interface. Depending on the model, that includes a full-color Smart Display, Auto-Gain, Clip Protection, ADAT expansion, MIDI connectivity, and integration with UAD Console and LUNA.

Three Tone Shaping Modes
One of the biggest changes to the new Volt range is the expanded Tone Shaping Preamp. Instead of a single character option, Volt Gen 2 now offers three distinct modes called Warmth, Focus, and Shine.
Warmth adds tube-style character, Focus provides a solid-state flavour, and Shine brings the character of a British Class-A preamp. The idea is to make it easy to choose a useful starting tone while recording instead of relying entirely on processing later. Each microphone preamp provides up to 60 dB of gain.
The Volt 1 Gen 2 keeps the concept particularly compact with one Tone Shaping Preamp, a dedicated front-panel Hi-Z instrument input, 2-in / 2-out operation, and USB bus power. It can record a microphone and instrument simultaneously and includes loopback for podcasting, streaming, and other content creation.
32-Bit Recording Across the Range
All of the new Volt Gen 2 and Volt Max interfaces use 32-bit / 192 kHz audio conversion. The updated converters are designed to preserve more detail throughout recording and monitoring, while the monitor and headphone sections provide dedicated control for tracking and mixing.
This upgrade applies throughout the family, from the portable Volt 1 Gen 2 through the larger Volt Max models, so choosing between interfaces is primarily a question of connectivity, workflow, and onboard processing rather than sacrificing the core recording format.

Smart Display, Auto-Gain, and Clip Protection
Starting with Volt 2 Gen 2, Universal Audio adds a full-color Smart Display that provides visual feedback for inputs, levels, and settings. Auto-Gain can automatically establish recording levels, while Clip Protection helps manage unexpected signal peaks before they ruin a take.
These features carry through the Volt 4 Gen 2 and Volt Max models. They make the new interfaces particularly useful for musicians recording themselves, where adjusting gain while performing can be awkward. Instead of repeatedly moving between the microphone, instrument, and interface, levels can be established quickly before recording begins.
Volt 4 Gen 2 Adds Room to Grow
The Volt 4 Gen 2 expands the standard Gen 2 platform into a 12-in / 6-out interface. It includes two Tone Shaping Preamps, two front-panel Hi-Z instrument inputs, additional line I/O, MIDI In and Out, and ADAT or S/PDIF optical input.
ADAT allows up to eight additional digital inputs at 44.1 or 48 kHz, giving the Volt 4 Gen 2 a clear upgrade path for setups that eventually need more microphones or external preamps. An onboard USB hub can also connect peripherals or power compatible MIDI controllers.

Volt Max Adds Compression While Recording
The new Volt Max series takes the Gen 2 platform further with Max Processing, Universal Audio's onboard dynamics processing system.
Six push-button compressor presets are provided for sources including vocals, guitar, and bass. The processing draws on the character of classic UA compressors such as the 1176 and LA-2A, allowing compression to be applied while recording without opening a plug-in. Combined with the three Tone Shaping modes, UA provides more than 18 possible tone and dynamics combinations directly from the interface.
Volt Max models also add features aimed at more complete desktop recording setups, including a built-in talkback microphone, two headphone outputs, ADAT or S/PDIF expansion, MIDI I/O, and an onboard USB hub.
Volt 2 Max for Compact Desktop Studios
Volt 2 Max provides 10-in / 4-out operation with two Tone Shaping Preamps and Max Processing. It combines two mic and line inputs, two front-panel Hi-Z instrument inputs, ADAT or S/PDIF optical expansion, MIDI I/O, Auto-Gain, Clip Protection, and the full-color Smart Display.
A built-in talkback microphone makes communication easier when another musician or vocalist is recording, while the two headphone outputs make the interface better suited to collaborative sessions than the smaller Gen 2 models.
Volt 4 Max Adds Speaker Switching
Volt 4 Max expands the Max platform to 12-in / 6-out operation and adds more analog connectivity for external equipment. It also introduces Main and Alt speaker switching, allowing two sets of studio monitors to be connected and compared directly from the interface.
Along with two Tone Shaping Preamps and Max Processing, Volt 4 Max includes two mic and line inputs, two Hi-Z instrument inputs, additional line I/O, ADAT or S/PDIF expansion, MIDI, two headphone outputs, talkback, Auto-Gain, Clip Protection, and gain-reduction metering on its Smart Display.
Volt 4P Max for Larger Recording Sessions
At the top of the range, Volt 4P Max is designed for sessions that require more microphones at once. It provides four Tone Shaping Preamps with Max Processing on every channel, making it possible to record multiple musicians, drums, or other multi-mic setups while retaining the same preamp character and onboard compression options found on the smaller Max interfaces.
It also includes 12-in / 6-out operation, four mic and line inputs, two front-panel Hi-Z instrument inputs, ADAT or S/PDIF expansion, MIDI, Main and Alt speaker switching, two headphone outputs, built-in talkback, Auto-Gain, Clip Protection, and the full-color Smart Display.
UAD Software and LUNA Included
Every new Volt includes the UAD Volt Studio Bundle with more than 15 UAD plug-ins and instruments, along with the LUNA Digital Audio Workstation.
The included collection covers recording, mixing, instruments, and guitar processing with software such as the UA 610 Tube Preamp & EQ Collection, Century Tube Channel Strip, Teletronix LA-2A Tube Compressor, UA 1176 Classic FET Compressor, Pure Plate Reverb, Galaxy Tape Echo, Oxide Tape Recorder, PolyMAX Synth, Anthem Analog Synth, and UAD guitar amplifiers.
Additional software is also supplied from developers including Celemony, Plugin Alliance, UJAM, UVI, and Image-Line, giving a new Volt system the tools needed to start recording and mixing without building a separate plug-in collection first.
A Much Bigger Second Generation
Volt Gen 2 is more than a converter update. Universal Audio has expanded the original Volt concept with more tonal choices at the preamp stage, better visual feedback, automated level setting, protection against clipping, loopback, and significantly more expansion on the larger models.
Volt Max pushes the idea further by adding hardware compression, talkback, additional monitoring features, and more studio-oriented connectivity. The result is a Volt lineup that can cover everything from a singer-songwriter recording with a laptop to a multi-mic band session built around the Volt 4P Max.
